Smoke detectors

The main and sometimes the only component of a fire alarm system in a home are the smoke detectors. Replacing your smoke detector at the right intervals is essential for maintaining safety in your home. Generally, smoke detectors have to be replaced every 10 years. Some brands will start beeping when the time has arrived after 10 years of use. On battery powered smoke detectors, you need to change batteries once a year. If your smoke detector begins to chirp, it’s a clear indication that the battery is running low and requires replacement. Promptly swap it out with a fresh battery of the same brand. Some smoke detectors come with sealed, non-replaceable batteries that last for several years (usually 5 to 10 years). Replace the entire smoke detector unit when the battery life expires.

we recommend to install smoke detectors in every location of your home. Inside every bedroom. In all hallways or areas outside bedrooms. On every level of the house, including the attic and basement. In or near the kitchen. Near fireplaces or other areas that are a fire risk. Near stairways to each level. It should be installed on the highest part of the ceiling in any of these areas.

Maintenance

It is good practice to maintain and test your smoke detectors. Clean the detector periodically to remove dust and debris and test it monthly using the methods we mention below:

  • Manual Test (Button Press): Locate the test button on your smoke detector. Press and hold the button for a few seconds. Listen for a beep or chirp. If you hear it, the alarm is working. If there’s no sound, replace the batteries or check the wiring.

  • Aerosol Spray Test: Purchase an aerosol spray specifically designed for testing smoke detectors. Stand about 2 to 4 feet away from the detector. Spray the aerosol towards the detector. If the alarm activates, it’s functioning correctly.

  • Real Smoke Test: Use a candle, a match, or a smoke can to create real smoke. Hold the smoke source near the detector. If the alarm doesn’t go off, consider replacing it.

  • Test fires Device: Consider using a Test fires device that simulates smoke and heat. This device triggers the alarm, allowing you to verify its functionality.

A functional smoke detector can be a lifesaver during emergencies. Please contact us if you need assistant replacing or installing smoke detectors. stay safe!
